Overview
Hilife is a Smart Lifestyle Solutions company that works with major developers in SE Asia to offer Smart Home, Estate and Community functionalities. As the Lead Designer, I was involved in all stages of the design process from requirements gathering to the creation of wireframes, designing high-fidelity prototypes, collaboration with developers and usability testing. I have been privileged to have had the opportunity to transform the UI/UX of the app and to improve the lives of 70,000+ Singaporeans. As a result of my professional background and education, I was able to bring a unique contribution to the company’s culture and design processes.
User Research & Ideation
My main goal when I joined the company was to redesign the app from V2.0 to V3.0. In the initial discovery phase I conducted a heuristic evaluation, competitive analysis, user surveys, and usability testing to identify user pain points of V2.0 of the app and learned that users had the most difficulty in finding the function they needed, with many complaining about there being too many sections.

I undertook card sorting and tree testing and used these insights to design a more logical information architecture, with 3 main modules: 'Smart Home', 'Smart Community' and 'Smart Estate'. I undertook a competitive analysis of similar Smart Home mobile applications in China, to identify commonalities in the styles and layouts of the most well received apps which are similar in functionality to hiLife.

Wireframes & Design System
I used the insights from the discovery phase and the rearranged information architecture to develop user flows and then wireframes. These were informed by the pain points identified through user research, most importantly arranging functions in a more clear and intuitive way.

I used the interface design insights from the competitive analysis to develop a design system, which I later applied to the wireframes to create high-fidelity prototypes.

High-Fidelity Prototypes
The latest version of the V3.0 redesign consists of 800+ screens in 3 main modules; 'Smart Home', 'Smart Estate' and 'Smart Community'. I used Figma to design the screens and collaborated with the developers using the online sharing platform Lan Hu.
User Testing & Lessons Learned
The redesigned V3.0 of the app has received positive feedback from users, with many commenters praising the fresh UI design and smoother UX.
