Post-Covid London

Overview

As Covid restrictions began to loosen in the UK, Londoners were looking for new opportunities to meet people and improve skills in hobbies they had picked up during the lockdown. I worked with a tech startup to design a revolutionary skills sharing app.

User Research & Ideation

Working with the CEO and Project Managers I researched user needs using Pollfish and created user personas and user journeys based on these insights. The main target user was identified as being 26 - 34 year old professionals in London and they were most concerned about the geographical proximity of potential matches and how the service will be able to verify that the matches have the skills claimed in their profiles.
Based on the user research data I developed the app information architecture and user flows. Next I sketched potential flows and screens - aimed at ensuring smooth sign up and skills verification processes.

Wireframes & Design System

I discussed the low-fidelity sketches with the project team and I developed these into wireframes to prototype the flow and layout of the app.
In the next stage I developed a Design System with fresh and vibrant colours and typography to appeal to the target user group and applied these to the wireframes. I collaborated with the developers to produce the final product.

High-Fidelity Prototypes

The proposed solution is a swiping/matching type app which allows users to show the skills they have and the skills they wish to learn. When users match they can arrange to meet together to teach each other new skills.
A key takeaway from this project for me is the importance of user research in the initial discovery phases when designing a new product. The personas - which were created from data obtained through pollfish surveys - were crucial in ensuring that actual user needs were considered throughout the design process.

User Testing & Lessons Learned

As the first designer to work with the startup I was able to have a lot of influence on the final design of the product and to help the company establish clear UI/UX guidelines and processes going forward.

I am looking for new challenges.
